In 1930, Betty Schinger (R. Harrison-Outman’s great-great grandmother) migrated from Water Valley, Mississippi along the Mississippi River to Cairo, Illinois and finally settled in Chicago, Illinois where she started a dry cleaning business.
States such as California, Pennsylvania, & New York also reported an increase in African-American populations during this time, as so many longed for better economic opportunities and to escape harsh segregation laws of the Jim Crow South.
